Strappy Sandals and Snookie's Poof

It is so crazy to me how we immortalize famous people. When a celebrity dies, there is this outpouring of emotions: people crying, singing, piling flowers up in the streets. For a person. A person just like you and me, who made mistakes, had a mom and a dad, smiled, and woke up everyday planting two feet on the ground.
What if the Life of Jesus got this type of attention? What if Jesus was a “celebrity”? What if on Easter, every news station was covering “the memory of Christ”?
Would streets be lined with makeshift memorials, flowers piled high with notes, posters and mourners? Would there be Facebook statuses, VH1 documentaries and 20/20 special reports all dedicated to the life of the only perfect man to ever walk the earth? Would people be making a fuss about the one man who came to save the entire population of the world, the king who overcame sin?
We idolize and even become somewhat involved in these strangers lives. We make them famous. It only takes 15 minutes of fame to start a trend. Look at Snookie’s poof, the fist pump, one-liners from Charlie Sheen, and YouTube phenomenon Keenan. Clearly, it doesn’t take much to become a sensation in our society. Jersey Shore’s claim to fame is being waste cases and tan until orange. Charlie Sheen becomes more famous the more he spews inebriated non-sense. Keenan lips syncs to hit songs and has an audience of millions. So I’ve got to ask, what kind of trend would Jesus start if he walked the earth today?
I think people would be more kind to one another. It would be cool to love and help others. Strappy sandals would be selling out in every store. Beards and robes would be all over the red carpet. Titles like, Walk in Love:  Long Days and Dirty Feet, and Save money! Turn Water into Wine, would top the “New York Times best sellers list”.  His death would spark a new generation of people willing to risk their lives to save the hearts of strangers. The Jesus trend would be more than a T-shirt that claims him as a “homeboy”.
Why is it that we care so much about the lives of these strangers but don’t know our neighbor’s names? As for Jesus (God made flesh, the perfect risen Son of God), well he’s hardly competition for the Easter bunny. Yet, he died for US; not from a drug overdose, suicide, or heart attack--He chose to, for you. That’s something worth idolizing. That’s a God that deserves more than 15 minutes of fame (and certainly more than 15 minutes of your week). He lived with the purpose of offering something eternal and that’s why we should be dancing and singing in the streets making Him famous.
Think about how often (and how long) you aimlessly search YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, or ESPN.com. When was the last time you thanked God for life? Or gave him 15 minutes? Instead of knowing everything about the lives of these strangers, why not get to know the God who made you? Need a point of reference? Check out the #1 selling book of all time and get to know a man who lived quite an extraordinary life, his name is Jesus Christ. He was quite a guy. You never know… he might change yours or at least start a few new trends in it.
Less hype. More Christ.  He is the original superstar. Time to make Him famous.
Who is the big name in your life?
